Blurb:
Amanda Lester wouldn’t be caught dead going into the family business. Her ancestor, Sherlock Holmes’s colleague Inspector G. Lestrade, is a twit. Nevertheless her parents refuse to see his flaws, and she’s going to a secret English school for the descendants of famous detectives whether she likes it or not.

When Amanda arrives at the dreaded school, she considers running away—until she and her new friends discover blood and weird pink substances in odd places. At first they’re not sure whether these oddities mean anything, but when Amanda’s father disappears and the cook is found dead with her head in a bag of sugar, they’re certain that crimes are taking place.

Now Amanda must embrace her destiny and uncover the truth. The only snag is that arch-villain Blixus Moriarty, a descendant of Holmes’s nemesis Professor James Moriarty, might be involved, and he doesn’t like nosy little girls interfering in his business.

Post 7. To end the Amanda Lester series or not to end the series?

I find that I am confronting a new problem as a writer. Now that I’ve got a few novels under my belt, I’m not sure how long to make my Amanda Lester, Detective series. In fact how long do you make any series? As far as I’m concerned I’ve got many more episodes in me. But how many books can you expect a kid to read before she gets too old for the stories or just plain loses interest?

Attempting to answer the question by looking at existing works doesn’t help. The Harry Potter series is seven books long. Elizabeth George’s Inspector Lynley series is at fourteen and counting. Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse series is at something like thirteen. And Nancy Drew goes on forever. But there are also trilogies, like The Hunger Games and Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series. Some of these series have strong overall arcs, some have weak ones, and some are purely episodic. Every case is different.

At the moment I’m planning out Book 7. Many threads that wind through the stories will be tied off in this installment. But a number of issues I’ve raised could continue for several more books. The question is, should they?

Amanda isn’t my only project. I’ve begun work on a new time travel series for adults and am also planning some historical fiction. In addition I want to write short stories and novellas to fill in the spaces between the Amanda titles. So it’s not as if I won’t be writing, or even writing about Amanda. But I’m not sure if I should keep the saga going.

To tell you the truth, I want to continue. But perhaps it’s time to admit that if I do, my readers will outgrow the series, which with Book 7 will feature a cast of fourteen-year-olds. I’m not sure what to do. It seems a waste of time to write books no one will want. On the other hand, a number of readers have asked me to continue. I’m awfully confused and could use some wisdom. So I ask you, what do you think I should do?

About the Author:

Paula Berinstein
Paula Berinstein is nothing like Amanda. For one thing, she’s crazy about Sherlock Holmes. For another, she’s never wanted to be a filmmaker. In addition, compared to Amanda she’s a big chicken! And she wouldn’t mind going to a secret school at all. In fact, she’s hoping that some day she’ll get to build one.
