About Say Goodbye For Now:

On an isolated Texas ranch, Dr. Lucy cares for abandoned animals. The solitude allows her to avoid the people and places that remind her of the past. Not that any of the townsfolk care. In 1959, no one is interested in a woman doctor. Nor are they welcoming Calvin and Justin Bell, a newly arrived African American father and son.

When Pete Solomon, a neglected twelve-year-old boy, and Justin bring a wounded wolf-dog hybrid to Dr. Lucy, the outcasts soon find refuge in one another. Lucy never thought she’d make connections again, never mind fall in love. Pete never imagined he’d find friends as loyal as Justin and the dog. But these four people aren’t allowed to be friends, much less a family when the whole town turns violently against them.

With heavy hearts, Dr. Lucy and Pete say goodbye to Calvin and Justin. But through the years they keep hope alive…waiting for the world to catch up with them.

My Review:

Say Goodbye for Now was a beautiful story. I knew it was going to involve dogs, but I did not know it was going to also tell the story of the 50s and 60s. There were a few things I didn't even know before reading this story. I really felt like it transported me back to a time where there was a lot of racial tension, and people were hurt for no reason. I honestly did not realize that interracial marriage was at one point illegal, I knew it has always been difficult for people of different colors to be together, so this story really opened my eyes. Also, I could not bear to think that a friend of mine would be beaten just because I was white and they were black. I had so many black friends when I was little, and I cannot imagine someone telling me I couldn't play with them or even if they were to be hurt in any way. This book really tugged at my heart strings, and I was constantly holding my breath, hoping nothing else too severe would happen to the characters.

I loved all the main characters: Lucy, Pete, Calvin and Justin. Pete had a very horrible father, and those scenes were a little hard to read. Sadly, people still go through situations like these. Despite this book being about the 50s and 60s, so much of this still goes on today, and it is heartbreaking. The romance in the story was an unexpected surprise, and I loved it. I also loved the letter writing, and how the time lapsed over the years before the book ended. I recommend this to everyone and anyone, and despite the book always being better than the movie, I hope someday this is made into a movie. I would love to see it again on screen, and I will definitely be re-reading this one!

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars! I was provided an ARC copy of Say Goodbye for Now in order to participate in this blog tour and to give my honest opinion.

Author Bio:

Katlyn Duncan was born and raised in a small town in western Massachusetts. Her overactive imagination involved invisible friends, wanting to be a Disney Princess and making up her own stories. Her bibliophile mom always encouraged her love of reading and that stayed with her ever since. Even though she works full time in the medical field Katlyn has always made time for books, whether she is reading or writing them.
Katlyn now lives in southern Connecticut with her husband and adorable Wheaten Terrier and she is thrilled to finally share her stories with the world.

Of course, I had to post this since the main character's name was Cara!
