EXCERPT

My room was exactly as I left it. My comic books were neatly stacked on a bookshelf in the corner. My laptop was on my desk next to a pile of textbooks. Nothing was touched while I was gone. This was the only place in the house I felt comfortable.
I took the lei off my neck and held it out as I flopped down on my bed. I closed my eyes and my thoughts wandered to Dagny. I thought she’d fade like a sunset. I was wrong. She was like a great album. The kind you obsess over. She was the album all other albums would be compared to and they would not measure up. Her melody would linger in my ears forever.
My eyes felt heavy. The last thing I remembered was the lei slipping out of my hands. I woke with a start. Remnants of a dream hung in the air. Horrible contorted wraith-like faces reached out for me. They were trying to warn me. It was like nothing I’d ever dreamed before.
The red numbers on my alarm clock said 3:23 in the morning. Oddly, this was the exact time I was born.
Trying to shake off the dream, I sat up. I thought, I wish there was some light in here.
The lamp next to my bed flickered.
That was weird. I had to still be dreaming. Maybe if I shut my eyes, I would wake up for real this time.
I lay back on the bed.
No, this was stupid. I was awake. It was just a coincidence. I thought it again to make sure: I wish there was some light in here.
Suddenly, every light snapped to attention. Blinded by the sudden return of so much light, I flung my legs on the floor and wished the brightness was gone. Blackness returned.
I tried it again: Lights on.
     Brightness flooded the room.
Jesus, I was like the telekinetic Clapper. Lights off.
     It was dark again.
Was this a joke? Maybe I was talking out loud and someone was messing with me. This could just be a coincidence. Maybe my mind was somehow in tune with some sort of power surge.
     Lights on.
Light again exploded, illuminating every inch of the room. My pulse raced.
I’m going to lose it now.

Top 10 book boyfriends

  1. Edmond Dantes, The Count of Monte Cristo
I remember reading this in a car driving down to Florida for Spring Break when I was probably about 11 or 12. The revenging count was my first bad boy book crush.

  1. Edward Cullen, Twilight
Yes, I know me and every other girl and woman who read this book would put him on this list. I’m not convinced there are actually any “Team Jacob” fans out there. I think they just made that up for marketing. (Kidding, of course Team Jacob fans!)

  1. Damon, Vampire Diaries
To be honest, this brooding babe is here more because of his portrayal in the TV show than the books. But, close enough? I have a thing for the bad boys.

  1. Eric Northman, The Southern Vampire Mystery series (aka, Sookie Stackhouse series, aka books that inspired the show True Blood)
I read every book in the series and watched every episode of the HBO show. While Eric in the show was definitely drool-worthy, I’m partial to the Eric in the books. (SPOILER!) I’m still angry Sookie didn’t end up with him!

  1. John Galt, Atlas Shrugged
Although some of the ideas about women in this book are antiquated, generally it’s about a very independent thoughtful woman and man who loves her for her intelligence. There’s something very sexy about that.

  1. Othello (of Shakespeare fame)
Alright, admittedly putting a protagonist from Shakespearian tragedy who murders his wife on this list makes me seem a little morbid, but is that any more so than vampires? (I just realized I picked 3 vampires. What does this say about me?) Even in immersed in manipulation and tragedy, there is just something about Othello.

  1. Mr. Darcy, Pride and Prejudice
I know it’s cliché, but who doesn’t love Mr. Darcy? In vain he struggled, but his feelings would not be repressed. (I’m going to swoon now.)

  1. Robbie Turner, Atonement
Lover of words and Cecilia, victim of circumstance, immortalized in fiction. He stole my heart on the page.

  1. Sam Spade, Maltese Falcon
This one may seem a little strange. But a cool, noir detective makes me tingle with excitement.
  1. Jamie, Outlander

Yes, I too fell for Jamie Fraser, even after that ‘punishment’ incident. His love is pure. (Swooning again!)
